“A protocol of polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNAs (PCR-RAPDs) was established to analyse the gene diversity and genotype identification for clones of Sequoia sempervirens

(D. Don) Endl. in Chile. Ten (out of 34) clones from introduction trial located in Voipir-Villarrica, Chile, were studied. The PCR-RAPDs technique and a modified hexadecyltrimethylammonium Belnacasan supplier bromide (CTAB) protocol were used for genomic DNA extraction. “BACKGROUND: Patients listed for transplant after the bidirectional Glenn (BDG) may have better outcomes than patients listed after Fontan. This study examined and compared outcomes after listing for BDG and Fontan patients.

METHODS: All patients listed for transplant after the BDG in the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study between January 1993 and December 2008 were evaluated. Comparisons were made with Fontan patients and with a matched cohort of congenital heart disease patients. Mechanical ventilation at the time of transplant remains a significant risk factor for death in the Fontan population, as does listing for transplant soon after the Fontan, suggesting that some patients may benefit from transplant instead of Fontan completion. Materials and Methods: Fifty-three consecutive patients with uveal melanoma were treated by using CE or IE in clinical trials approved by the Institutional Review Board. Prognostic factors associated with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in the liver and extrahepatic (systemic) organs were retrospectively evaluated. Covariates of age, sex, preexisting extrahepatic metastases, liver enzyme levels, tumor volume, radiologic response in hepatic metastases, and treatment type were analyzed.

Results: Compared with CE, high-dose (>= 1500 mu g of GM-CSF) IE resulted in significantly better OS (20.4 vs 9.8 months, P = .005) and systemic PFS (12.4 vs 4.8 months, P = .001) at univariate analysis. Overall, women outlived men (14.4 vs 9.8 months, P = .01).

results, a probability-of-failure analysis was conducted to predict the likelihood of hip preservation and to improve surgical decision-making.

METHODS: Of the 189 hips (in 157 patients) that were treated with periacetabular osteotomy by a single surgeon from May 1991 to September 1998, thirty-one had diagnoses other than developmental hip dysplasia and twenty-three were lost to follow-up. The remaining 135 hips (in 109 patients) were retrospectively reviewed at an average of nine years. Hips were evaluated with use of the pain subscale of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index postoperatively as well as with radiographs that were made preoperatively and at one and more than five years postoperatively. Osteotomy failure was defined as a pain score of >= 10 or the need for total hip arthroplasty.

RESULTS: One hundred and two hips (76%) remained preserved at an average of nine years, with an average Western Ontario and McMaster Universities pain score

CONCLUSIONS: The Bernese periacetabular osteotomy can be effective for the treatment of painful hip dysplasia, but complications may be expected in as many as 15% of cases. The ideal candidate is the patient who is less than thirty-five years of age and who has good or excellent hip joint congruency.

Procedures-Fecal samples from 15 pigs/farm were collected. The three-dimensional models were established using the computed tomographic (CT) data of 60 patients. The lumbosacral disc of one cadaver was bisected coronally, while the lumbosacral disc of the other cadaver was bisected sagittally. The internal view of the lumbosacral discs helped to further evaluate the efficacy of the NPLSIF procedures.

Results. In the three-dimensional surgical simulation experiment, the feasibility of the NPLSIF procedure was verified in every case. In the cadaveric experiment, the NPLSIF procedures were successfully executed. The surgical

procedure on the first cadaver took 3 hours. After improving the workflow and having gained some experience, the procedure on the second cadaver took 1.5 hours. On the navigation workstation, the preoperative plan was completed in 3 to 5 minutes and each intraoperative CT scanning took 30 seconds. The quality of the intraoperative CT images was comparable to that of normal CT images. CT images and the internal view of the lumbosacral discs showed that the NPLSIF procedures had yielded satisfactory discectomy and endplate preparation.

Conclusion. The feasibility of NPLSIF was verified by the means of three-dimensional surgical simulation and cadaveric experiment. Clinical studies are needed to further investigate the efficacy and efficiency of NPLSIF in clinical practice.
