We implemented a systematic review process, which was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. In order to analyze gendered language within medical reference letters pertaining to residency applications and faculty hirings, we conducted a broad search from database inception to July 2020 encompassing Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO for original research articles. Eighteen research papers, encompassing a compilation of 12,738 letters of recommendation submitted by 7,074 applicants, formed the basis of this investigation. Thirty-two percent of the applications received were submitted by women. Discrepancies were evident in the portrayals of women within the reference letters.
