The objective of this study was to quantify the morphological features of the psoas major muscle in patients diagnosed with symptomatic multilevel degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (SMLSS), and to determine the relationships between these morphological characteristics and clinical symptoms and functional outcomes.
The study's sample included 114 patients, diagnosed with SMLSS, each falling into one of three segments. Symptom presentation in the patients was assessed employing the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), while visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were simultaneously recorded. The L3/4 intervertebral disc served as the site for evaluating psoas major morphology, employing these three methods: (i) calculating the psoas muscle mass index (PMI); (ii) determining the mean muscle attenuation in Hounsfield units (HU); and (iii) determining the mean ratios of the short axis to long axis of both psoas major muscles to assess morphological changes.
The PMI of men was found to be higher than that of women, with statistical significance (p=0.0001) evident. A substantial reduction in PMI (p=0.0002) and muscle attenuation (p=0.0001) was observed among patients with profound disabilities. The PMI and muscle attenuation levels were considerably higher in patients with either no or mild back pain (both p<0.0001). Univariable and multivariable analyses revealed a positive correlation between higher HU values and improved functional status, as measured by ODI scores (p=0.0002). Conversely, a higher PMI was linked to reduced back pain severity, as assessed by VAS scores (p<0.0001).
Muscle attenuation of the psoas major in patients diagnosed with SMLSS, as demonstrated in this study, was positively correlated with functional status, and PMI was inversely related to the severity of low back pain. Future prospective research is essential to evaluate whether physiotherapy programs can ameliorate clinical manifestations and improve the functional state of patients exhibiting SMLSS.
The findings of this study indicate a positive relationship between psoas major muscle attenuation and functional capacity, and a negative association between PMI and the severity of low back pain in individuals diagnosed with SMLSS. Future prospective research is essential to evaluate if physiotherapy programs can improve muscle function, thereby relieving clinical symptoms and improving the functional status of patients with SMLSS.

To mitigate the scarcity of understory plants and the decline in biodiversity, which are consequences of the high tree density in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations on the Loess Plateau in northwestern China, our analysis integrated both field survey data and published research. Using the upper boundary line technique, we studied the relationship between canopy density and the diversity of understory plants. A field study at the Guanshan Forest Farm in Jingchuan County, Gansu Province, found that Robinia pseudoacacia plantations harbored a higher number of understory plant species (91) than natural grassland (78), based on the survey. The dominant species composition varied in response to canopy density, unlike the consistent species patterns in natural grasslands. A meticulous examination of both existing literature and field data indicated that, under a mean annual precipitation (MAP) of 550 mm, increased canopy density initially resulted in a stable understory plant cover, subsequently declining either substantially or slightly; simultaneously, understory plant biomass displayed either a sharp and sustained decline or a slight rise and subsequent decrease.
